Task Before the First Class

A. BEST PIECE OF CREATIVE WORK: This work was my attempt to reflect postmodern architecture and capture its eclectic and diverse nature through the use of mix-media. The almost chaotic nature of the work challenges modernist ideals of architecture, such exemplified through the words of Mies Van Der Rohe "less is more". However in the true spirit of post modernism, the work also embraces previous modernist ideals through each of the smaller frames, which are deconstructions of the larger central frame, becoming more simplified and further minimalistic, hence embodying modernist beliefs of architecture.

B. GREAT PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE: Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao responds to the history and character of its location and is a piece of architecture that is pertinent to Bilbao. The work not only is a fine example of postmodern architecture but it also revived the city of Bilbao through tourism, establishing it as a hub of art and culture. It is a building that made a positive contribution to its environment, hence what I believe to be great architecture.

C. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL: This photograph was taken at the beach of Positano while on my holiday to Italy. Positano is known as ‘The Vertical City’ and its only takes one glimpse of its colourful buildings climbing up the steep mountainside to see why. Despite the terrible weather, the beautiful vivid colours of the building and its charm still shone through.
